Project #1: Home-made Laundry Soap

HOME-MADE LAUNDRY SOAP

My grandmother made her laundry soap for as along as I can remember.  When my girls were children I made my own as well.  Now that laundry soap costs as much as $17.99 for about a gallon and doesn't even get the clothes really clean, I decided it was time to return to my tried and true brand:  Homemade Laundry Soap at a cost of about $1.16 per gallon!

What you need:

a clean 5 gallon bucket
a one gallon measure, such as an empty milk bottle.
1 bar Fels Naptha Soap or Zote, available at super-markets depending on where you live
1 box 20 Mule Team Borax
A long strirrer, such as a long handled spoon.
1 cup measure
at least one  clean empty one-gallon jug
grater
funnel (optional) and 1/2 gallon pitcher

What to do:

grate the soap into the 5 gallon bucket
add one gallon of hot tap water stir until melted
This entire process takes less than 15 minutes.

add hot tap water one gallon at a time, stirring after each addition
add 1 cup Borax and stir.
This part of the process takes less than 5 minutes.

Cover the bucket loosely and allow to sit 24 hours.

Assemble the 1/2 gallon pitcher, funnel, 1 gallon jug and soap mixture.
Give the soap mixture one more stirring, then use the 1/2 gallon pitcher to transfer the soap to the jug using the funnel.  Fill the gallon jug half-way, the add 1/2 gallon hot tap water.
Store the remaining soap in the covered bucket until needed again.  When adding your soap to the washer use 1/2 to 1 cup per load.  You can use this soap in any washer.
You will be amazed at how clean your clothes will get!
